CAPTAIN JAMES TURNER (1706 – 1776), son of Captain Samuel Turner and Desire Barker

MARY TURNER (1704 – 1775), daughter of Colonel Amos Turner and Mary Hyland

Captain James Turner, the son of Samuel and Desire (Barker) Turner, was born on 18 December 1706 in Scituate. [1] He was baptized on 24 April 1715. [1] He died on 30 May 1776, age 69. [1] He is buried in the Men of Kent cemetery in Scituate. [2] He married Mary Turner on 23 November 1732 in Scituate. [1]

Mary Turner, the daughter of Amos and Mary (Hyland) Turner, was born on 23 April 1704 in Scituate. [1] She was baptized on 10 July 1709. [1] Mary, the wife of Captain James, died on 19 August 1775, age 73. [1] She is buried next to her husband in the Men of Kent cemetery. [3]

Mary's father referred to her as Mary Turner in his will of 13 April 1739; her brother Seth Turner, gentleman, referred to her as Mary Turner in his will of 3 October 1743. [1]

In land records dated 10 and 13 May 1730 and 22 June 1730, James Turner, feltmaker of Boston; Nathaniel Turner, husbandman of Scituate; and Samuel Turner, yeoman of Scituate sold land in Plymouth county that had belonged to (their grandfather) John Barker. Mary joined on a further sale on 2 January 1733. [1] On 11 September 1733 James Turner—feltmaker of Scituate—bought two-thirds of a dwelling house that once belonged to his grandfather John Barker. [1]

On 19 April 1735 James was called a hat maker and on 18 November 1742 and 17 August 1745 he was called a gentleman when he bought land that had been laid out for Amos Turner, Sr. and Amos Turner, Jr. [1]

Captain James Turner of Scituate made his will on 2 September 1775. He left land and personal property to his sons James Thurner and Samuel Turner. The heirs of his daughter Desire Turner and his daughter Mehitable Chittenden were to divide several pieces of propetery and provision was made for his unmarried daughter Molly. He named his sons James and Samuel and Eli Curtis his executors. On 17 June 1777 his heirs were listed as James Turner, yeoman; Mehitable Chittenden, the wife of Gideon; Mary T., spinster; Eli Curtis, Jr., Abner Curtis, Luther Curtis, Desire Curtis, Seth Curtis and Asa Curtis, heirs of his deceased daughter Desire Curtis, the wife of Eli; and Samuel Turner of Scituate, deceased. On 27 July 1778 Eli Curtis, yeoman of Scituate, divided the land between his children Eli, Jr., Abner, Luther, Desire, Seth and Asa, and Mary Turner, spinster of Scituate. [1]
